昌德宮(1810) 및 後園(1610) Changdeok Palace and Rear Garden

When I was a high school boy, my frends and I would visit Changduk Palace and the rear garden on Saturday afternoon very often. But now only some part of the garden is open to public. The architecture and landscape both can be the representative of Korean traditionional architecture. Especially the idea of garden shows Taoist sprit, that is, trying to be nature itself, so sometimes it is difficult to tell which part is artificial.

고교시절 토요일 하교시에 친구와 자주 들렸던 창덕궁 후원이었다. 그렇지만 대학 2학년(1975년) 때 조국정 선생님과 토단 친구들과 다시 가서 제월관풍관과 연경당 그리고 승재정을 바라보았을 때야 비로소 명품을 보고 있다는 생각에 사로잡혔다. 그 이후로 나의 전통건축 여행과 사진 찍기가 시작되었다. 김석수 형이 찍은 제월관풍관은 왕자가 공부하는 곳으서 경사지에 자리잡아 시원한 전면 누마루와 달리 뒤는 담벼락과 1미터 정도만 떨어져 있고 좁고 긴 툇마루가 있는 정자였다. 그 좁은 툇마루있는 공간을 대했을 때 무엇인가 기슴에 와 다았다. 아! 여기야말로 고독히 명상에 잠길 수 있는 장소가 아닐까 하는 생각이 들었다.
